Enabling blue-green infraÂstructure in Lund, Sweden
Biochar has long held a place in the sustainability strategy of the Swedish construction company Skanska, helping to push sustainable projects with less climate footprint. As a natural oasis in the Swedish city of Lund, “NobelÂparken“ combines all advantages of the city with the peaceÂfulness of nature. Here, biochar was applied as a substrate mixed with compost and contributes to the growth and preservation of 236 different plant species spread over 3.8 hectars.
Replacing cement with biochar at the Carbon Removal Park Baltic Sea, Germany
For the construction of our largest carbon removal park to date, we have produced concrete blocks that consist of 1/3 biochar by volume. This application can replace cement and thus drastically reduce the CO2 footprint of the final product while improving product features.
Water filtration at Plaine de Plainpalais in Geneva, Switzerland
In 2018, biochar enriched with compost was used to replant the city trees of this central park in Geneva. The main goal of the blue-green infrastructure project is to protect the Lake Geneva. Thanks to its porous surface, the added biochar effectively filters storm-water pollutants and at the same time stores water and nutrients for the plants.
Why is our biochar carbon-neutral?
We process biogenic residues into biochar and thus prevent the carbon from returning to the atmosphere as CO2 as part of the natural carbon cycle. Since all process emissions for biochar production are netted with the stored carbon, biochar has a truly zero footprint.

Replacing silver in solar plants with biochar
Within the project "Silver Lining" we test in cooperation with Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, Meyer Burger, and OTH OberÂflächenÂtechnik Hagen GmbH & Co. KG how biochar serves as a conductive filler in printing pastes for metallization. The goal of our scientific research is to achieve the electrical conductivity of biochar particles needed to ensure optimal solar panel functionality. Above all, the primary objective is to significantly reduce the amount of silver in the conductor paths.
Biochar-based substrates for better water filtration
A research project of HafenCity University in Hamburg in cooperation with Novocarbo examined the effects of co-composted biochar on stormÂwater management systems. StormÂwater runoff in cities brings pollutants into aquatic systems. The research team tested to what extent co-comÂposted biochar in substrates can remove selected trace organic contaÂminants in blue-green infrastructures.
The results showed: the higher the concentration of biochar in subÂstrates, the lower the contamination.
Conductive thermoÂplastic with 40 % less fossil polymere
This project developed in cooperation with the IfBB (Institut für BiokunstÂstoffe und BioverbundÂwerkstoffe) and the University of Hanover an electrically conductive thermoÂplastic granulate based on dust-reduced biochar. We replaced up to 40 % of the polymer in the transportation box.
